“For the person who disagreed with the secret about looks when involved in theatre: I am currently cast as Ilse in Spring Awakening. I am a size 22.”
I havent seen the original post, but this post makes me a bit angry. Because this is definitely the exception to the rule. I’m a size 22, too, and I have spent my life trying to make it in the musical theatre world. I always get cast as the mom. Always. Even if it’s not right for my voice part, even if it isnt right for my skill level. And as a person who is a size 22, I’m sure the op has experienced the same thing a lot. One good role does not mean that there is no consideration about looks when being cast.
And I’m not even bitter about it. I’m not going around thinking “oh the theatre world is so prejudiced they wont cast me cause I’m fat”. No. People have to look the part. Sutton Foster talks all the time about how her boobs were padded in Anything Goes. She isnt offended. Looking the part is a huge part of casting.
I dont even know where to end this.
^For example. Conrad Birdie is a sex god. The director isn’t going to cast someone in the role that they don’t think looks like a sex god. They have to look the part.
